The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (formerly University of Sokoto) is one of the four Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September 1975 , at which time three University Colleges (now full-fledged Universities) were established.

The development of the university started on a temporary site (now called City Campus), situated along Sultan Abubakar Road, Sokoto. classes started in October 20th, 1977, with an initial enrolment of ninety-three undergraduate students for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education and Bachelor of Science; and an academic staff strength of thirty-three. Established October 1, 1991 by the Federal Government of Nigeria, University of Uyo inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of erstwhile University of Cross River established by the then Cross River State Government in 1983. Academic activities commenced in 1991/92 session.

The University is located in the heart of Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria the largest oil producing state. Uyo is easily accessible by road and there are two international airports within 100km radius, Calabar in Cross River State, and Ibom airport.

The Educational programmes outline by the Third National Development Plan stressed the establishment of more Universities in the Country. Consequently, the Federal Government of Nigeria established the University of Maiduguri in 1975, along with six others situated at Kano, Ilorin, Sokoto, Jos, Port-Harcourt and Calabar. University of Maiduguri is situated in the outskirts of Maiduguri along Bama Road.
