What is the difference between the e-learning degree and a traditional degree?
The only difference between the e-learning degree and a traditional degree is that the course work will be completed in virtual classrooms instead of physical classrooms. You will be held to the same academic rigor and integrity and upon graduation, you will be awarded a degree/certificate that is exactly the same as regular students from the university concerned. You will have all the rights and privileges of traditional alumni of the university.
Are e-learning students eligible to be part of NYSC program?
E-learning students will, upon successful completion of their program, be awarded their respective degrees and subsequently called up for the NYSC program.
Are e-learning students required to come to campus?
E-learning students are not required to visit campus. At the beginning of each session students may want to participate in the matriculation ceremony. You are always welcome to visit the campus of the university at which you are a registered student at any time.
What degree programs are available?
Degree program in Economics, Banking & Finance, Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing are available starting from the 2014/15 academic session. Other degree programs will become available in the future.
How long do I have to complete a course?
You can complete a course as quickly as you would like. You will have 15 weeks from the time your semester starts to finish the course. The courses are set up in 12 lessons, and we suggest you complete at least one lesson a week. Certainly you can complete the course quicker if you choose to do so, however you will not be able to advance to the next semester until the designed start date.
How long does it take to complete a course?
Courses are set up in 12 lessons, and we suggest you complete at least one lesson a week, but it is possible to complete two lessons a week and finish the course in as little as 6 weeks. You are in charge of how quickly you complete the course. Keep in mind that you have a total of 15 weeks to complete your courses.
What if I need to take a break?
You will need to refer to the rules applicable to students at your university (see student handbook). Depending on the circumstances, generally you can request for a break and it will be treated on a case-by-case basis.
What if I don’t understand the course material?
The online course is built with lots of reinforcement of material and study aids and resources to help you. There are ‘pre-quizzes’ and ‘check your understandings’ along the way. There is also a tutor assigned to each course that can help you with course materials. There is a virtual advisor that can answer many of your questions. Finally, if you really do not understand the material you should contact your Academic Advisor.
How do I access my textbook or eBook for the course?
eBooks are embedded in all courses. You can link to your eBook from the Course Home section of your class using the eText link. Further, in each week’s lesson checklist, there is a link to the required eBook readings. You can download your textbooks onto all your personal devices – phone, laptop, tablet and desktop for offline study. For more information on using the eText, please visit the Virtual Advisor link.
How do you ensure there is quality and academic rigor?
FU online courses are designed and developed by subject matter experts well known in their respective fields. Further, the courses have been reviewed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure they meet minimum academic standards.
Who will help me when I have questions?
There are teams to help you with technical issues, tutors to help you with course content, many features are built into the course, so we can monitor students and assure they are progressing, as they should be. There is Frequently Asked Questions section that can provide you with guidance, a virtual advisor that can answer many of your questions, and there are also academic advisors to help you with more difficult questions and help you succeed.
Who do I call if I have technical problems?
It is important to understand what type of technical problem you are having.

If your problem is in other areas, you will have support from your tutor and your Academic Advisor.
Is it possible to cancel a Class?
If you need to cancel any of your courses for any reason, please contact your advisor first. Do note that you will not be entitled to any type of refund.
Will I receive a grade?
Yes, you will receive a grade and will be able to see your grade as you progress through the course. To successfully pass the course, you must earn at least a 60% out of a possible 100%. The syllabus for each course will provide a grading scale.
How is my grade calculated?
Your grade is calculated on grades earned on the following elements: quizzes (after each lesson); tests (after lessons 3, 6, 9 and 12), and a final exam. In some courses, there are additional requirements of an essay. This information can be found in the course syllabus.
What happens if I fail my course?
Hopefully with the resources available, this will not happen; however, in the event you fail your course, you may retake it again within 6 month for free, but after 6 months you are required to pay the full tuition per course.
Will a failing grade be reported on my transcripts?
Failed courses will be reported to your institution at the end of each semester, however the grade will be updated upon successful completion of the course retake.
Will a failing grade affect my GPA?
Yes it will affect your GPA until you retake the course.
What do I do when I finish my course?
Celebrate! Your Academic Advisor will be notified that you successfully passed your course and you will be enrolled in your next semester courses.
How can I be sure I complete all the required work…
There are two ways you can assure you stay on track and finish all the assignments. First, in each course there is a syllabus and a Course Checklist with course requirements. Please print both of those for easy reference and assure you meet each assignment. Also, you will be able to look at your gradebook and see what assignments you have completed, your grade earned, and what you have left to complete. Further, at any time you have concerns, you can contact your Academic Advisor.
What is the difference between a practice quiz, a graded quiz…
After each lesson, you have a practice quiz and a quiz. The practice quiz is not calculated into your grade, and you can take a practice quiz up to 5 different times. Each time, a new practice quiz is generated. You must pass with an 80% or higher before being allowed to take the quiz. The quiz consists of 15 items, it is timed, and can only be taken once.
After lessons 3, 6, 9 and 12, there is a practice test and a test in addition to the practice quiz and quiz. Each practice test and test covers the previous three week’s lessons. The practice test is not calculated into your grade, and you can take a practice test up to 5 different times. Each time, a new practice test is generated. You must pass with an 80% or higher before being allowed to take the test. The test consists of 15 items, it is timed, can only be taken once.
A graded exam is the final assessment of your knowledge on certain skills and concepts covered in the course and cannot be completed until all lessons, quiz practices, quizzes, practice tests and tests are completed. You will need to go to a JAMB CBT Center to take your final exam or other approved testing centers.
Can I retake a graded quiz, test or exam?
No, you are not allowed to retake a quiz, test or final exam. We recommend you spend more time with your tutor to assure you stay on course to successfully complete this course and that you fully understand the course content. Also take the practice quizzes and practice tests to assure you understand and know the content.
Why can’t I see the correct answers to my final exam?
We do not release the answer. This is due, in part, to maintain the academic integrity of the final exam.
What if I get locked out of the system while taking a test?
It is important to note, all quizzes, tests and the final exam have time limits. If you exceed your time limit, you will be locked out of the system. However, if you are locked out for other reasons, you should be able to log back into the system and begin your quiz, test or final exam at the exact spot you were at when you were locked out.
Where can I find my Tutor?
There is an instructor in every class. Your instructor is your success coach. He or she will provide the tutoring as well as the academic advising required for your course. The emailing platform in your learning management system includes your instructor’s contact information; s/he is just an email away.
What services are available at the Virtual Tutoring Services?
Tutoring is offered via online text chat along with a collaborative whiteboard where students and tutors can work together to solve problems. You can also schedule an appointment 30 minutes ahead of time.
What are Virtual Tutoring Service hours?
We provide live, online tutoring Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM enabling students to get the help they need when they need it.
Are there any special requirements when I submit my essay?
Please keep in mind, Tutoring Services will check your paper for plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious offense and can result in expulsion from the program. Information on how to submit your essay will be included in the course syllabus.
When I am taking quizzes, tests or exams, can I have tutor help?
No. Tutors are there to help you with questions while you are in a course; however, you are not to use a tutor when taking your graded assignments. The tutors are aware of test items found in the course material.
Costs, Tuition and Fees FAQ
What is the cost of the e-learning degree program? Can students pay in installments?
The tuition for the 2014/15 academic session is N100,000. Students are allowed to pay in installments of N50,000 per semester. The Acceptance Fee is N23,000
What if I cannot afford the tuition?
Scholarship opportunities are available and students who can demonstrate that they have financial need are encouraged to apply. Students from the Northeast of Nigeria will be favorably considered.
